Whatz in the name?

Do you know how these companies got their names... I bet you must have known most of them. Here is a revision for you.

Compaq
This name was formed by using COMp, for computer, and PAQ to denote a small integral object.

Mercedes
This was actually the Diamler/Benz's French financier's daughter's name.

Adobe
This came from the name of the river Adobe Creek that ran behind the house of founder John Warnock.

Apple Computers
It was the favorite fruit of founder Steve Jobs. He was three months late in filing a name for the business and he threatened to call his company Apple Computers if the other colleagues didn't suggest a better name by 5 O'clock. They couldn't, he did!

CISCO
It is not an acronym as popularly believed. It is short for San Francisco.

Corel
The name was derived from the founder's name Dr. Michael Cowpland. It stands for COwpland REsearch Laboratory.

Google
The name started as a joke boasting about the amount of information the search-engine would be able to search. It was originally named 'Googol', a word for the number represented by 1 followed by 100 zeros. After founders - Stanford graduate students Sergey Brin and Larry Page presented their project to an angel investor, they received their first funding cheque made out to 'Google'. Since they didn't want to risk going back to the investor to correct the error, they retained the name 'Google'!!

Hotmail
Founder Jack Smith got the idea of accessing e-mail via the web from a computer anywhere in the world. When Sabeer Bhatia came up with the business plan for the mail service, he tried all kinds of names ending in 'mail' and finally settled for hotmail as it included the letters "html" - the programming language used to write web pages. It was initially referred to as HoTMaiL with selective uppercasing.

Hewlett Packard
Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard tossed a coin to decide whether the company they founded would be called Hewlett-Packard or Packard-Hewlett.

Intel
Bob, Noyce and Gordon Moore wanted to name their new company 'Moore Noyce' but that was already trademarked by a hotel chain . So they had to settle for an acronym of INTegrated ELectronics.

Lotus (Notes)
Mitch Kapor got the name for his company from 'The Lotus Position' or 'Padmasana'. Kapor used to be a teacher of Transcendental Meditation of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

Microsoft
Coined by Bill Gates to represent the company that was devoted to MICROcomputer SOFTware. Originally christened Micro-Soft, the '-' was removed later on.

Motorola
Founder Paul Galvin came up with this name when his company started manufacturing radios for cars. The popular radio company at the time was called Victrola.

ORACLE
Larry Ellison and Bob Oats were working on a consulting project for the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency). The code name for the project was called Oracle (the CIA saw this as the system to give answers to all questions or some such thing). The project was designed to help use the newly written SQL code by IBM. The project eventually was terminated but Larry and Bob decided to finish what they started and bring it to the world. They kept the name Oracle and created the RDBMS engine. Later, they decided on the same name for the company.

Sony
It originated from the Latin word 'sonus' meaning sound, and 'sonny' a slang used by Americans to refer to a bright youngster.

SUN
Founded by 4 Stanford University buddies, SUN is the acronym for Sanford University Network. Andreas Bechtolsheim built a microcomputer; Vinod Khosla recruited him and Scott McNealy to manufacture computers based on it, and Bill Joy to develop a UNIX-based OS for the computer.

Yahoo!
The word was invented by Jonathan Swift and used in his book 'Gulliver's Travels'. It represents a person who is repulsive in appearance and action and is barely human. Yahoo! founders Jerry Yang and David Filo selected the name because they considered themselves yahoos.

Just thought of sharing these facts..............

.
.
.
He just has to open his mouth and ask, so simple. (Select the text to see the answer)

Thinking of Daddy

A good article that I came across...

HOW A SON/DAUGHTER THINKS OF HIS/HER DADDY AT DIFFERENT AGES:

At 4 Years
My daddy is great.

At 6 Years
My daddy knows everybody.

At 10 Years
My daddy is good but is short tempered

At 12 Years
My daddy was very nice to me when I was young .

At 14 Years
My daddy is getting fastidious.

At 16 Years
My daddy is not in line with the current times.

At 18 Years
My daddy is becoming increasingly cranky.

At 20 Years
Oh! Its becoming difficult to tolerate daddy. Wonder how Mother puts up
with him.

At 25 Years
Daddy is objecting to everything.

At 35 Years
It's becoming difficult to manage my son. I was so scared of my father
when I was young.

At 40 Years
Daddy brought me up with so much discipline. Even I should do the same.

At 45 Years
I am baffled as to how my daddy brought us up.

At 50 Years
My daddy faced so many hardships to bring us up. I am unable to manage a
single son.

At 55 Years
My daddy was so far sighted and planned so many things for us. He is one
of his kind and unique.

At 60 Years
My daddy is great.

Thus, it took 56 years to complete the cycle and come back to the 1st.stage. Realize the true value of your parents before it's too late

Its all in a smile

In US, most of them smile, and share a word or two while they pass-by strangers in everyday life. I greatly appreciate this social habit. Things are so very different in India, and it would be good if such social habits are adopted by the youth.

Got this interesting article as a forwarded mail. Its well written and worth a read.

A smile is the light in your window that tells others that there is a caring, sharing person inside.

Life is short but a smile takes barely a second.

Every tear has a smile behind it.

A smile is a curve that sets everything straight.

A good neighbor is a fellow who smiles at you over the back fence, but doesn't climb over it.

If you see a friend without a smile; give him one of yours.

A smile starts on the lips, A grin spreads to the eyes, A chuckle comes from the belly; But a good laugh bursts forth from the soul, Overflows, and bubbles all around

Because of your smile, you make life more beautiful.

Too often we underestimate the power of a smile, which have the potential to turn a life around.

Smiles are the language of love.

The real man smiles in trouble, gathers strength from distress, and grows brave by reflection.

A smile is an inexpensive way to change your looks

All people smile in the same language.

Children smile on the average 400 times/day; Adults: 15 times/day. Ever wonder why?

A warm smile is the universal language of kindness.

So Smileeeeeee please :-))

A Desi's dating story

Found an interesting Desi-story as forwarded mail in my inbox. Its a good read!

A Mom comes to visit her son kumar for dinner.....who lives with a room mate, a girl named Sunita. During the course of the meal, his mother couldn't help but notice how pretty Kumar's roommate was. She had long been suspicious of a relationship between the two, and this had only made her more curious.

Over the course of the evening, while watching the two interact, she started to wonder if there was more between Kumar and his roommate than met the eye. Reading his mom's thoughts, Kumar volunteered, "I know hat you must be thinking, but I assure you, Sunita and I are just roommates."

About a week later, Sunita came to Kumar saying, "Ever since your mother came to dinner, I've been unable to find the silver chutney jar. You don't suppose she took it, do you?" Kumar said,"Well, I doubt it, but I'll email her, just to be sure."

So he sat down and wrote:

Dear Mother:
I'm not saying that you 'did' take the chutney jar from my house, I'm not saying that you 'did not' take the chutney jar. But the fact remains that it has been missing ever since you were here for dinner.
Love, Kumar

Several days later, Kumar received an email from his Mother which read

Dear Son:
I'm not saying that you 'do' sleep with Sunita, and I'm not saying that you do not' sleep with Sunita. But the fact remains that if she was sleeping in her OWN bed, she would have found the chutney jar by now under the pillow...
Love,
Mom.

I.T Legends

I came across some priceless pics of I.T legends while browsing the net...

Andreas Bechtolsheim , Bill Joy, Scott Mc Nealy and Vinod Khosla of SUN(StanfordUniversity Network) MicroSystems

Founded by four StanfordUniversity buddies. Andreas Bechtolsheim built a microcomputer... Vinod Khosla recruited him; Scott McNealy to manufacture computers based on it, and Bill Joy to develop a UNIX-based OS for the computer...

Bill Hewlett(L) and Dave Packard(R) of HP

Behind them in the picture is the famous HP Garage.

Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard tossed a coin to decide whether the company they founded would be called Hewlett-Packard or Packard-Hewlett. And the winner was NOT Bill... the winner was Dave.

Bob Noyce and Gordon Moore of Intel

Bob Noyce and Gordon Moore wanted to name their new company 'Moore Noyce'. But that was already trademarked by a hotel chain... So they had to settle for an acronym of INTegrated ELectronics... INTEL

Infosys group

Picture taken when INFY was started. This picture was found in the album of the clerk who took this picture... The picture was with that clerk only because it was his birthday and he just told everyone to stand together at one place to take a pic.

He borrow a camera from his friend and as he can not tell any of his boss to take pic, so he took pic by himself... even it was his birthday.

Ken Thompson (L)and Dennis Ritchie(R) ,creators of UNIX...

Dennis Ritchie improved on the B programming language and called it 'New B'. B was created by Ken Thompson as a revision of the Bon programming language (named after his wife Bonnie). He later called it C.

Larry Page(L) and Sergey Brin(R), founders of Google...

Google was originally named 'Googol'.

After founders (Stanford graduates) Sergey Brin and Larry Page presented their project to an angel investor... they received a cheque made out to 'Google' !... So they kept name as GOOGLE

Linus Torvalds of Linux Operating System...

Linus Torvalds of Linux Operating System Linus Torvalds originally used the Minix OS on his system which he replaced by his OS.

Hence the working name was Linux (Linus' Minix). He thought the name to be too egotistical and planned to name it Freax (free + freak + x).His friend Ari Lemmk encouraged Linus to upload it to a network so it could be easily downloaded.

Ari gave Linus a directory called linux on his FTP server, as he did not like the name Freax. Linus like that directory name and he kept the name of his new OS to LINUX...

Steve Woznaik(sitting) and Steve Jobs of APPLE Computers...

He was three months late in filing a name for the business because he didn't get any better name for his new company.

So one day he told to the staff: "If I'll not get better name by 5 o'clcok today, our company's name will be anything he likes..." so at 5 o'clcok nobody comeup with better name, and he was eating APPLE that time... so he keep the name of the company 'Apple Computers'

Lessons from the spastic kids

I found an interesting incident that happend in Hyderabad [India], and believed everyone of us have something to learn from this...

It was a sports stadium. Eight Children were standing on the track to participate in the running event.

* Ready! * Steady! * Bang!!!

With the sound of Toy pistol, all eight girls started running. Hardly have they covered ten to fifteen steps, one of the smaller girls slipped and fell down, due to bruises and pain she started crying. When other seven girls heard this sound, stopped running, stood for a while and turned back, they all ran back to the place where the girl fell down.

One among them bent, picked and kissed the girl gently and enquired 'Now pain must have reduced'. All seven girls lifted the fallen girl, pacified her, two of them held the girl firmly and they all seven joined hands together and walked together and reached the winning post.

Officials were shocked. Clapping of thousands of spectators filled the stadium. Many eyes were filled with tears and perhaps it had reached the GOD even! YES. This happened in Hyderabad [INDIA], recently! The sport as conducted by National Institute of Mental Health.

All these special girls had come to participate in this event and they are spastic children. Yes, they were mentally retarded Challenged.

What did they teach this world?

Teamwork...
Humanity...
Equality among all...

Successful people help others who are slow in learning so that they are not felt far behind. This is really a great message... spread it!

Luxury of TIME

This slide-show/movie is an old one, and I am sure you guys must have watched it before. But guess its worth watching it again. This video makes us realize that watching some crap in television just to kill time is the worst activity one can ever do. Much to the dismay, many of us are fond of doing it. Thank god! I am not a TV addict.

Blood Donation

Today, I donated my blood for the first time in US (guess first time in life too) at
place: Intervoice premises
time : 3:30 pm

Here is some info that I found abt blood donation...

Did you know that every donation of blood can help save more than one life because it can be processed into its components: red cells, plasma, platelets and cryoprecipitate. Through one donation, you can help save as many as four lives.
Have you ever wanted to know what happens to your donation after collection? Well, when the phlebotomist collects your unit of blood, samples of your blood are also collected in test tubes. Your blood is sent to the lab for processing, while your test tubes are sent to the testing facility. All donated blood will undergo this testing regardless of how many times the donor has donated. While testing is being completed, the donated blood unit is separated into components using a method called centrifugation (spinning.) The platelets and plasma components are then placed into separate bags, with the red cells remaining in the original bag.

After the blood is tested, typed and processed, it is labeled by blood group and the day of donation. It is then stored for distribution to hospitals. It is stored until an order is received from a hospital for a specific product and blood type. Whole blood can be transfused for 21 days after the donation. Red cells can remain refrigerated for 42 days. Platelets are stored separately and must be used within five days of the donation. Plasma is often frozen for later use.
